Blinds in poker
Two forced bets posted before the cards are dealt, which create something to play for.
The two players to the left of the button post the small blind and the big blind before any cards are dealt. The big blind is the full opening bet; the small blind is usually half of it.
Blinds exist to make the pot worth contesting. Without them, folding every hand would cost nothing and there would be no reason to play.
They also create the worst seats at the table: both blinds act last before the flop but first on every street after it. Defending the big blind well means calling with a wide range, expecting to lose most of the pots but to lose them cheaply.
