Combos in poker
The number of specific two-card holdings a hand name covers, six for a pair, four suited, twelve offsuit.
A hand name is shorthand for a set of actual card pairings, and the sizes differ.
- A pocket pair such as
AAhas 6 combos. - A suited hand such as
AKshas 4, one per suit. - An offsuit hand such as
AKohas 12.
That 6 / 4 / 12 split is why offsuit hands dominate a range by weight even though they look like a minority on a range grid. Across all 169 hand names there are 1,326 combinations in total.
Combos are also what make blockers matter: holding one ace removes three of the six ace combos from your opponent's range.
